Neowin has a report that a beta release of Microsoft's recently acquired (and rebranded) anti-spyware solution will be released as a beta on January 6, 2005. An extensive set of screenshots is also available. The report hedges on whether this will be a public or private beta but the screenshots indicate that Microsoft has stuck with the core functionality and user interface of the GIANT software they acquired and is moving fast to get this out to the Windows user base.

I installed this software this morning on a perfectly functioning dell inspiron 9100 and it promptly broke my Mcafeee security center functionaility and caused both my wireless and lan connectivity to die. I did a system restore and got my connectivity back for about an hour. Then I stuppidly put all the mcafee stuff back and it broke again. As of now I am doa. I hate MS.

Sean: sorry to hear about your problem with the tool. From the monitoring I've done of other blogger's reports and comment on their sites, this seems like an unfortunate but rare occurrence. Almost every report I've tracked down so far has been quite positive. I don't have access to any systems with McAfee installed so I can't even try to reproduce your problem.
Jasper: It is ironic. But, until the Longhorn slow train rolls into the station, I'm at least happy to see them acquire a quality product and attempt to address the issue head-on. I'm not saying Longhorn is going to make all these problems go away (I doubt any modern OS *can* be completely secure BTW) - we'll have to wait and see.
