Symantec acquires Sygate - issues incomprehensible press release

The good news - an acquisition that makes perfect sense. Symantec announced yesterday that they are acquiring Sygate. The acquisition means that Symantec will be able to offer better endpoint security monitoring and enforcement. In plain English - they'll be able to better ensure that any device - including mobile devices like laptops and Tablet PCs - will comply will all security policies before being allowed to connect to the network. That means that the proper security patches have been applied, preventative tools installed and updated, etc.

The bad news - here's the incredibly tortured language they use to explain this event:

"Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Sygate Technologies, a technology leader in endpoint compliance solutions. Sygate's technology will complement Symantec's presence on the endpoint to create a holistic solution to address the security, compliance, and remediation requirements of today's large enterprises."

Huh? This is the lead? If you asked most people what a "holistic solution to address the security, compliance, and remediation requirements of today's larger enterprises" meant what kind of reaction do you think you'd get? Personally, I'd expect a "what did you just say?"

Two paragraphs down, it gets better:

"Endpoint compliance solutions help enterprise organizations enforce security by guaranteeing that all devices connected to a network – desktops, laptops, servers, and mobile devices – are running the appropriate security solutions, are configured correctly, and possess up-to-date patches. Symantec will now be able to help businesses enforce business policies and automate security practices to regain control of network security, reduce costs, and ensure compliance across the organization."

Ah… now I understand. It's a smart move as Symantec continues to consolidate its position in the enterprise security space. But the corpseak has got to go guys. Security is hard enough to explain already. Don't make it harder.
