Single Play DVD a Hoax

The single play DVD concept that was reported here on TUMW has turned out to be a hoax. I'd like to apologize for having been sucked in to the hype; at the time it was reported, there were some credible names in the Microsoft journalism world attached to the story. Bink.nu has posted a retraction that is a reprint of Ed Bott's explanation of how this non-story came to be. Paul Thurrot, whose byline was attached to the original report, has posted a retraction of sorts. Scoble weighs in here, and makes some good points about how the current high-octane news systems can be gamed, but are also very fast to self-correct.

As Marc (my partner on this blog) told me, we all fall for these types of things from time to time, but the important thing is to correct matters when we discover we've made a mistake. Marc helpfully updated the original post as soon as it became clear that something fishy was going on, and hopefully this post now clears up any remaining questions.
