Nissan plans to integrate a Microsoft XBOX 360 into their new concept car. The car, called the
“Urge” will feature a 7” screen so customers can play XBOX games while parked. Nissan unfortunately
does not plan to produce the car for consumers, but this concept may influence forthcoming models.
The idea does
raise some interesting questions. What is the feasibility of integrating a video game system into a vehicle? There are
a number of concerns beyond the manufacturing, like any potential firmware or console updates, as well as tech support.
Maybe On-Star could handle tech support calls in the future.
Is there a market for such a thing? Just think, road trips, weekend excursions, an hour long trip to Auntie Em’s? Kids today always have a gaming system in hand no matter where they are. In SUV’s especially, there are already DVD flip down screens that would easily serve as a gaming screen. If the idea takes off in the mainstream, there might also be an opportunity in after-market gaming system installations.
Are integrated gaming systems just a marketing gimmick? It's an idea that just
might work. In fact, I think that very soon we will see wireless connectivity in our autos. Instead of using a digital
media player, why not have your SUV show up on your home PC as a drive that you can download all your music, videos
(commercial and personal) and other media to so you can take it with you? Or imagine driving through a Starbucks and
downloading a new episode of a TV show or CD while you're waiting for the triple non-fat latte, then transferring that
content back to your PC when you get home. One day soon, we may use our vehicles not only as rolling video game parlors
and movie theaters, but also as four-wheel iPods.
